Pre-Conference Early Career Day

AARES 2026 Early Career Economics Research Workshop (ECREW)

Date:  9 February 2026, 10.00am – 4.30pm
Venue:  Flinders City Campus; One Festival Tower, Station Road, Adelaide 5000; Level 14, Room 1407
The AARES 2026 Early Career Economics Research Workshop (ECREW) is an opportunity for early career agricultural, environmental and resource economics scholars to interact with highly experienced mid and senior peers. The day will include commentary by senior and emerging leaders in agricultural and resource economics from Australia and internationally. In addition, early career researchers who participate in this event will have an opportunity to present their research in front of senior colleagues who will provide constructive feedback on the presentation.
Program (Note – this is subject to change on the day, with various senior people subbing in)
10:00-10:30am Coffee and morning tea

10:30am-12:30pm Thematic discussion (around 20 minutes per topic) by experienced researchers. Senior academics will provide informal 2-3 minutes opening remarks about what they consider key points for ECRs in their theme, before the panel is opened up to the ECRs to ask detailed questions from the panel. It includes advice on:
  • Getting published – Professor Darla Hatton-MacDonald, University of Tasmania – Editor Ecological Economics; Professor Tiho Ancev, University of Sydney – former editor Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics; Professor Iain Fraser, University of Kent, UK, Professor Michael Burton, University of Western Australia
  • Communicating Economics – Professor Susan Stone, Adelaide University; Professor David Pannell, University of Western Australia; Professor Mark Morrison - Central Queensland University
  • Influencing policy with research –Professor Sarah Wheeler, Flinders University; Professor Lin Crase, Adelaide University; Professor John Quiggin, University of Queensland
  • Getting Grants – Dr Claire Doll – University of Western Australia; Associate Professor Diane Jarvis, James Cook University, Associate Professor Sayed Iftekhar, Griffith University

12:30 – 1:30pm - Catered Lunch + mentor/mentee “Speed dating” session where each mentee meets 4 to 5 senior participants and spends 5 minutes discussing cue card provided questions

1:30-4:30pm - Early career participant presentation parallel sessions
 Thematically related sessions with up to 15 presentations. Will be split across 3 rooms on Level 14, allocated on the day, with senior academics providing feedback after ECR presentations (which will be a practice for their AARES contributed paper sessions).

4:30-5:30pm Break (check-in to hotel)

5:30 – 7:00pm ECR Drinks and Canapes Reception (Back on Level 14, Room 1407) with workshop participants, mentors and invited local conference participants and early arrivals from out of town. Sponsored by RAID.

If needing wifi, Eduroam will be available, along with a wifi password created for the day.

How to get to the venue
Flinders University City Campus is located next to Adelaide Railway Station. Look for the Flinders University sign at the front entrance, then use the escalators or elevators to Level 1 to access other floors. Tell the staff/security on level 1 that you need access to Level 14 to attend the event; the staff will then call a lift for you. Exit the elevator, and follow the signage, or turn towards the Railway Station, and Room 1407 is on the right.
